Conventions

As I am going to produce a front cover, contents page and a double page spread article I feel it would be a good idea to research into how these pages are laid out, the content on each page, what things stand out on the magazine and different techniques used to make title's / headlines / picture's etc to stand out.

Front Page :

This is an edition of Q Magazine, I have uploaded an image of the front cover because I want to analyse it and give an example of what a top magazine front cover looks like. Firstly their isn't a magazine I am aware of that covers more than one genre like I am planning to do. So when I am looking at examples like this one their is a lot of things i can relate to and do the same but others like deciding how to include these other genre's I will have to work out my self. On this magazine they have a band member from the Foo Fighters as their main image on the front cover this is because the Foo Fighters are the main concentration of the magazine that week. The band member has been cut out, I am presuming they used photoshop to cut out this image, they then put it into Indesign to put it on top of this background and then arranged the rest of the front cover features around this. Alongside him on either side of the front cover are advertisements of the information / stories that are inside the magazine. These are all in a smaller font and in he colour white this helps them stand out, but not as much as the main attraction's on the page. Lastly the colour's used on this front cover aren't dull they are quite bright and will attract attention well.

Contents Page :

This is a contents page I found on google. I chose this image because I like this the layout, the picture has been placed more to the left to leave space on the right for the text. This works because the picture is shaped almost like a capital L, and so fits down the left hand side of the page and across the bottom and like I said leaving that space left in the right corner to put the text. The title contents stands out because it is on a darkish background and in bold white letters. As you look from the top of the page to the bottom the background colour gets ligeter then almost white / grey, this is where the text is written in black so it shows well on the light background. All together this is a good contents page and depending what image I had, I could try to follow a simalar style.

Double Page Spread :

This is a double page spread from the inside of the music magazine Kerrang, the band featured are called My Chemical Romance. I picked this particular double page spread because I feel the page is set out great and it defiantly attracts the eye of the reader. The pictures used are exiting and not plain, the text stands out and is not a task to read and the titles/headlines are bold and big which make sure they are not missed and stand out. On this double page spread one picture takes up the whole of one page and so no text can be put there, it therefore has to be fitted on the other page as well as the other pictures that are on. In this particular double page spread I think it works well, but I feel that some more text may be needed as the story there might be a bit plain. I will consider all this when I come to plan my double page spread and take into account these points that I have pointed out.

  1. A good basic set of pages and comments. there are still a lot of things you could say about each one - you may like to see if you can develop this further.
